Witnesses are being sought after a man pulled from the river in Maidstone died.
Officers attended St Peter Street shortly after 11.30am on Friday following a report a man had fallen into the River Medway.
Kent Fire and Rescue and the South East Coast Ambulance Services also attended.
The man, aged 50, was taken to King's College Hospital in London via air ambulance where he was later pronounced dead.
His next of kin are aware.
The death is currently being treated as non-suspicious and a report is being prepared for the coroner.
Kent Police is also referring the matter to the Independent Police Complaints Commission due to previous contact relating to the same man.
The referral to the IPCC is mandatory in these circumstances.
