POLICE officers in Kent have been issued with a stern warning about the "consequences of too much Christmas cheer".

Det Ch Insp Geoff Palmer, of the force's Professional Standards Department, has called on officers to exercise "discretion" and "wisdom" while enjoying a festive off-duty tipple.

The force's internal newsletter for December, The Relay, warns: "Not only would it take just one individual to go over the top to have a seriously detrimental effect on the force's reputation, but excessive drinking and behaviour could also cost someone their job."

Det Ch Insp Palmer said in the newsletter that a conviction for drink driving would most likely lead to dismissal.

He said: "The Christmas period brings with it opportunities to celebrate, relax and generally enjoy the company of friends and relatives, usually in a festive atmosphere, but there are occasions when short term enjoyment leads to long term hardship and regret when people forget their responsibilities, make inappropriate decisions and take unacceptable risks."

He added that drink-fuelled bad behaviour by any officer or member of civilian staff could end in a criminal prosecution.

He said: "The public has a right to expect a certain standard of conduct from police personnel, whether on duty or otherwise."

He added: "Discretion, sound judgement and wisdom should override impulsive, reactive and thoughtless behaviour, whatever the circumstances.

"So enjoy your Christmas - but in such a way that you look forward to the New Year."
