Fifty-four vehicles were stopped by police during an overnight operation to catch drink drivers in Maidstone town centre.

Targeted motorists were pulled over in St Peters Street between 10pm on Friday and 4am the next day. Fifty-one suspects were asked to perform breath and field impairment tests on the roadside.

One person was arrested on suspicion of driving while under the influence of alcohol and 13 others were dealt with for various motoring offences, including a driving without a seat belt, using a mobile phone and driving a defective vehicle.

Two vehicles were seized for not being insured and another was taken off the road because it was in a dangerous condition.

The six-hour mission was part of a summer drink and drug driving campaign from Kent Police. In the last two weeks, patrols have been based at strategic locations across the county to try and spot offenders.

The month-long scheme is being run in conjunction with Kent County Council’s Don’t Blow It initiative.
