Policeman hurt as 'shoplifters' drive straight at him

A KENT police officer was injured when a car containing two suspected shoplifters was driven straight at him.

The officer was trying to stop the pair getting away during the incident in Maidstone town centre on Thursday. The officer’s actions led to the arrest of two men.

A Kent Police spokeswoman said: "At 5.56pm police were alerted to a suspected shoplifting incident at a DIY store in Maidstone town centre.

"Police responded immediately and were promptly on the scene. The suspects were then reported to have got into a car and driven at an officer who was trying to stop them.

"The vehicle struck the officer. This resulted in him receiving bruises to his leg. The suspects were subsequently arrested."

A 48-year-old Chatham man was arrested on suspicion of shoplifting. He was in police custody awaiting interview.

A 28-year-old man of no fixed home, was arrested on suspicion of shoplifting. He is also in police custody.

Area Commander for Maidstone and Malling Police, Supt Mark Salisbury, said: “Not only did the officers arrive promptly on the scene but one of them also put his life at risk to stop the suspects.

“Clearly he and his colleagues have shown dedication and commitment in the line of duty and I commend them for their actions. I am extremely relieved that no one was seriously injured in the incident.

"This action does, however, remind the people of Maidstone and Malling that their police officers are constantly striving to make their area a safer place to work, live and visit and also sends out a clear message to criminals from Maidstone and Malling and those from other areas, that Kent Police officers will not hesitate in arresting them and bring them to justice ”

Police are appealing for witnesses, in particular a motorcyclist who was in the Barker Road area (on the one way system), to come forward.
