Need some colour in your life?
Everyone is invited to this year’s celebration of Holi, the festival of colour, which will be held once again in the Collis Millennium Green Park off St Philip’s Avenue, Maidstone, on Sunday, March 24.
Holi is a popular ancient Hindu festival, also known as the Festival of Love, the Festival of Colours, and the Festival of Spring.
It celebrates the eternal love of Radha Krishna and signifies the triumph of good over evil, as it celebrates the victory of Vishnu as Narasimha Narayana over Hiranyakashipu.
It originated in India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, and other regions of Asia, but has now spread to many parts of the Western world through the Hindu diaspora.
The celebrations at Collis Green are being presented jointly by the Collis Millennium Green Trust and the Maidstone Nepalese Community.
Cllr Dinesh Khadka is one of the organisers. He said: “Holi celebrates the arrival of spring, the end of winter, and the blossoming of love.”
“For many, it is a festive day to meet others, play and laugh, forget and forgive, and repair broken relationships.
“Officially it lasts for a night and a day, starting on the evening of Purnima (Full Moon Day), falling in the Hindu calendar month of Phalguna, which falls around the middle of March.”
The Collis Green is free and starts at 12.30pm and lasts till around 4.30pm.
It will include food, games, music and dancing.
