A pervert who groomed a teenage boy for sex has been locked up under an extended sentence after a judge branded him a “predatory paedophile”.
Mark Dean was jailed for six years and will be subject to licence for a further two years.
The 45-year-old, of Coleridge Close, Larkfield, previously denied two charges of causing a child to engage in sexual activity and four of sexual activity with a child, but was convicted.
When he appeared for sentence this week, his lawyer said he had now overcome his difficulty in accepting his guilt.
Maidstone Crown Court heard Dean took the victim out on speedboats and invited him to his home and showed him pornographic films, before indulging in sex acts.
Tanya Robinson, prosecuting, said Dean drew the boy in with various activities. “The Crown say he was grooming him for what was to occur,” she said.
It led to him having full sex with the boy.
“The boy realised what was happening to him was wrong and he ought to do something about it because he didn’t want it happening to anyone else,” said the prosecutor.
He told the police and Dean was arrested in January 2007.
Recorder Christopher Wilson said it was abundantly obvious Dean was predatory towards teenage boys and there was a lack of insight into the criminality of what he had done and the effect on the victim.
“It is quite clear to me you are a predatory paedophile who attended naturist events for the purpose of targeting young boys,” he said.
The judge said he heard evidence from two other witnesses that Dean behaved in a similar way with them.
“You now accept the offences occurred,” he said. “It is very great misfortune you didn’t have the courage to make those admissions before having evidence called against you.”
There was a significant risk of him committing further offences.
“As yet, it seems to me clear you have no real understanding of the grave psychological harm you have caused these three men by your conduct,” said Recorder Wilson.
Protection was needed by imposing an extended sentence. Dean will be banned from unsupervised contact with children under 18 and his name will appear on the sex offenders’ register for life.
Sally Hobson, defending, said Dean probably had “not grown up fully” and found it easier to be in the company of young people.
“This has been a wake-up call for him,” she said. “He will have to keep out of temptation in future. It has taken its toll on his health. He has suffered from depression.”
Speaking after the case, Dean’s victim said he felt the sentence had not been long enough.
“I wanted him to not be able to do this to anyone else,” he said. “Six years is not enough – I feel it’s like he’s allowed to get away with it. Even though he’ll be on the sex offenders’ register, this doesn’t give him any more than eight years. I wanted him to get life.”
He added: “He has got six years but I have got the rest of my life with the mental scars.”
