Maidstone became Madonna's kingdom, if only for a short while, as she rounded off the first day of Radio 1's Big Weekend.

In an entrance worthy of the Queen of Pop Madonna landed in a helicopter two hours before her headline gig at Radio 1's Big Weekend.

But even queens can't always get their way. A league cricket match at the Mote Park ground couldn't be cancelled and Madge had to land on the rugby pitch next to where the game was being played.

The fans weren't disappointed. She arrived on stage seated on a golden throne to perform opening number Candy Shop in front of a packed tent.

It wasn't an outfit you'd expect from the Material Girl herself, tracksuit bottoms and a lacy top tucked into knee high boots, but the raunchy dance moves added more than enough spice to the act.

Fans held their breath when she told them it was "good to live in the past" but Like a Virgin wasn't on the cards on Saturday and instead the crowd was treated to Hung Up.

Give To Me and Music both got big cheers and when the time came to perform number one single Four Minutes Madonna gyrated with a virtual Justin.

At one point the singer even donned a guitar, and strummed a few bars of the Stones' Satisfaction before leading into one of her own hits.

The gruelling gym schedule has certainly paid off, the star was matching the dancers step for step in many of the songs.

The four-hour sound check the night before, during which the star took notes to perfect her performance, certainly did no harm either.

Pixie Geldof and the Mayor of Maidstone Richard Ash were both spotted enjoying the set.

Like all good things it came to an end far too quickly after just six songs, but it's fair to say by the looks on her fans' faces, she'll be welcomed back with open arms.
