A Maidstone rapper is raising money for a cancer charity after his friend and collaborator died of leukaemia.
Dan Downing, 25, goes by the name of Daniel Son and has released latest LP Wax On volume 2 in memory of Danny Ball, known as Danny 2.0, who died last June aged just 32 after an eight month battle with the disease.
The project was initially discussed in 2014 before Mr Ball of Paddock Wood, was diagnosed and was going to be a five track EP produced entirely by him, but after his death it was expanded to a 14 track record with the help of his band, Juicebox.
Former Oakwood Park Grammar School pupil Daniel Son said: “We planned to create this project long before he passed. The last time I saw him, he told me to finish and release the project as planned. The only thing was, I felt the need to extend the length in order to raise money for charity – hence the time difference between his passing and the project’s final release.
“Danny was a writer, singer, musician, producer, videographer. The most creative, multi-talented, down to earth, positive guy I’ve ever had the pleasure of knowing. I’m thankful for how he influenced my life and musical direction.”
He added: “The LP is my most personal project to date. It’s something that is intended to be heard from start to finish, in that order. I discuss life and death, the idea of a higher being, depression and the overcoming of, the mourning process and more. One track ‘Peace Go With You Brother’ tells the story of our relationship from the start.”
Wax On vol. 2 can be purchased here, with all proceeds going to Bloodwise (formerly Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research), which researches all types of blood cancer and offers support to patients and their families.
