If you’ve ever fancied living in a medieval yeoman’s house now could be your chance but there’s a catch – you will need to let members of the public wander around it several times a month.
The National Trust is looking for new tenants for Stoneacre, a 15th century property in Otham, just a few minutes from junction 8 of the M20.
The rent is being advertised at £1,700 per calendar month.
Lucky occupants will have the run of the house – thought to be named after the local limestone that underlies it – as well as the gardens and meadow.
But visitors will be allowed into the great hall, one of the six bedrooms and the solar room – traditionally the family’s private living and sleeping quarters – on Saturdays and bank holidays between March and October.
Sarah Leslie, lettings manager at Jackson Stops, which is handling the tenancy for the National Trust, said they are remaining open minded about who to let the property to.
She said: “The current tenant is a local man in his mid-forties who has always known and loved the building.
“Before him we had a gay couple in the fashion industry who brought an artistic flair to things and started a tradition of holding art exhibitions there.
"Before the couple we had a lady who was very passionate about gardening.
“We will consider anyone who has the time and energy to look after the property and the grounds and who is passionate about old buildings.
“It’s a big responsibility but that’s reflected in the rent – for a property of this size you would expect a much higher rental.”
A shortlist of 10 potential candidates has been drawn up who will be interviewed by the trust.
Volunteers will help greet visitors and show them around the property but tenants will be expected to be there on most open days and will be responsible for maintaining the grounds, with a little help from the trust.
