Relive the glory days of Maidstone's club scene

It was known as the greatest club in the South East, bringing revellers from London and all over the region.

But do you remember it?

It is like they say with the 1960s, if you can remember Maidstone’s Warehouse nightclub in the 1980s then you possibly weren’t there.

But don't worry – party animals can rekindle their memories and relive the glory days of clubbing with a special reunion night on Saturday.

A note of caution to old ravers - don’t head to the site of the warehouse itself, or you could end up spending a long mirthless night wandering the banks of the Medway.

Instead, as the old building was knocked down when the riverside was developed in 1990, the reunion will take place at Banks Bar in Bank Street, where a host of DJs including Ben Allen, Jazzy Jeff, and Rod Lucas will entertain the crowds.

Among those most looking forward to the night is former doorman and event organiser Ainslie Vine.

"It was the most popular club in the South East,” he said. “Everyone knew it. We thought it would be great to have a reunion so I got hold of all these guys. It’ll be great to see some old faces.
“It’s going to be the ultimate 80s reunion,” he added.

Top of the bill will be hirsute Warehouse Legend himself Mick Clark, who became an established figure at the Maidstone club and went on to found the town’s Atomics club, before making his name with gigs around the UK and Europe.

While his long locks may have greyed, his enthusiasm is undiminished.

"The Warehouse used to get 700-800 people every Thursday Friday and Saturday night,” recalled Mick. “It was a brilliant atmosphere. When you look back at videos it’s really high energy.”
