A community has raised concerns during the icy weather after discovering their village has just one salt bin.
Residents and Green campaigners in Allington, Maidstone, are asking Kent County Council (KCC) to request an urgent review of the ward after last weekend's snow and ice left buses, lorries and residents struggling to navigate the dangerous roads and pathways.
John Young, the manager of the BP garage in London Road, donated grit to make a main alleyway safer, and a local county councillor has promised to fund more bins in the ward.
A KCCspokesperson said: “Our adopted highways winter service policy sets out the council’s priorities during this period.
“Officers have carried out a thorough review to determine where to safely install salt bins in the county, with 3,000 now located in key areas across Kent.
“The existing salt bin stock is sufficient to meet the needs of local people.
“Parish councils and county members can source extra salt bins if they wish to pay for them.”
Local Green campaigner Rachel Rodwell said: "I live in Allington and know just how difficult and dangerous it is to get around in the snow and ice.
"I was shocked to find that Allington Ward only had one salt bin, yet in the ward next door there are around 10.
“It feels like Allington has been overlooked. We are putting community pressure on KCC to help. I have written to KCC officers and started a petition.
"In the meantime we are working with others whenever possible. I am pleased that this pressure has now prompted a local county councillor to act.”
Rachel's petition gained more than 100 signatures in the first 24 hours.
Local resident Jen Hickey said: "This footpath is a main walking route to our schools, shops, nurseries and library. The ice had become so dangerous for everyone, especially for young children on the school run.
"As a community, we could have made the path safe days ago if there had been a salt bin anywhere to be found in central Allington. Thank you to all who responded at very short notice."
