A major road was closed in both directions after a car hit a tree.

The A249 in Maidstone was shut after the collision this afternoon.

The closure was between the junction of the Sittingbourne Road with Tudor Avenue, and the Chiltern Hundreds Roundaabout.

The accident happened just after 1.30pm opposite Whatman Close, where a car struck a tree.

The driver was not seriously injured.

The road was closed while the vehicle was removed.

Traffic was diverted through the Vinters Park estate.
