A major road has reopened after a serious accident left it closed and motorists facing traffic tailbacks.

The A229 Northbound is now open and traffic around Maidstone is starting to clear.

The road was closed at around 4.50pm and there was slow traffic from Springfield to Junction 6 of the M20 by Blue Bell Hill, Maidstone, following an earlier incident.

There was congestion to roads around Maidstone and traffic was struggling to find alternative routes.

The police have been contacted for further information.
