Traffic is moving slow in many areas of Maidstone this morning due to a number of roadworks.

The continued work on the Maidstone Bridges system on the A229 is causing queues due to the work now taking place at peak times.

Previously work ceased in the morning and evening peaks to allow traffic to move freely, but the work is now said to be at a stage where it would be unsafe to remove the lane closures.

Traffic is queuing from junction 3 of the M2 for Maidstone, with queues stretching for miles.

Kent County Council Highways have tweeted to say that traffic heading into town from junction 6 of the M20 is taking up to 50 minutes to get into town from the motorway.

There are also queues on the A229 Shears Crescent and College Road, again caused by the gyratory works.

Peak closures will continue this evening so drivers are being told to expect delays.

A lane that was closed on the A249 Detling Hill yesterday remains closed today due to an unsafe manhole cover.

This lane closure is causing long delays on the A249 between the Stockbury Roundabout and Detling Hill.

There is also the usual morning traffic on the A249 roundabout with junction 7 of the M20 for Detling.
