Rookie Tom Sherreard has survived the cut at the Open Championship - his first major tournament.

The 20-year-old, from Maidstone, finished one-under par, out performing many top pros, on a second blustery day at Royal Birkdale.

He is seven shots off the leader and one behind the only other amateur to make it to the weekend, Chris Woods. They will battle it out for the Silver Medal.

We covered Tom's sensational day hole-by-hole - read how the dramatic events unfolded below.

1.35pm

The projected cut is set at +7 - so if Tom can finish level par or better he should be in shape to stay for the weekend. Without having struck a ball on the second day, Tom lies in joint 57th place, seven shots off the lead.

2.20pm

Things are looking up for Tom. Bad weather has struck again at Royal Birkdale and scores are high - the cut is likely to be closer to +10.

3.15pm

Tom tees off, tied at 50th place and seven shots behind the lead. The cut is currently predicted at +9 - so he'll need to find his top game to stay in the competition.

3.25pm

We're off and running - Tom posts a par at the first hole.

4pm

Tom is up to 45th place after hitting par on the first three holes.

4.30pm

The upset is on! A birdie at the fifth sends Tom hurtling up the leaderboard to a tie for 33rd place, and means he is one of an elite group of players under par today at Royal Birkdale.

4.50pm

A bogey at the sixth puts Tom back to par.

5.15pm

In the spirit of British sportsmen everywhere, Tom is engineering a rollercoaster ride. He shoots par at the seventh, then a birdie at the eighth. He's one under par and up to 32nd place, and is probably doing some well deserved Henman-style fist pumping...

5.30pm

After nine holes Tom is tied for 30th place at -1 for the day and +6 for the tournament. With many players struggling, he is now ahead of the likes of Colin Montgomerie and Robert Karlsson. If he finishes no worse than +8 he should make the cut.

6.10pm

Two pars after the turn mean that Tom has now broken into the top 30 and is still on course for a dream first Open appearance.

6.25pm

Another ominously long wait for news from Royal Birkdale turns out not to have been ominous at all - another par at hole 12! Tom is still one under for the day, and tied in 28th place.

6.26pm

It's worth mentioning that he's tied with Retief Goosen and Justin Rose - who Tom played a practice round with in the build-up to the tournament. Rose, of course, turned professional days after finishing fourth at the Open with a stunning chip-in, 10 years ago.

6.50pm

Drama! Tom drops a shot at the 14th to go back to par for the day. He's now +7 for the tournament with four holes to play - will he keep his nerve as the finish line approaches? The projected cut is now +10.

7.45pm

Come on Tom! The golfing equivalent of a Tim Henman five-setter continues to unfold as Tom birdies the 15th and pars the 16th to set up a famous finish. He's one under for the day again.

7.55pm

HE PARS THE 17th! Tom's +6 for the tournament heading into the final hole, and only a disaster will prevent him from qualifying for the weekend's play.

8.20pm

HE'S DONE IT! Tom pars the final hole and will survive the cut for the weekend. He enters the clubhouse in joint 26th position, with only a handful of golfers left on the course. He's one shot behind Chris Wood, the only other amateur on the course, and they will battle it out over the weekend for the Silver Medal.
