Rush hour misery for motorists

Motorists faced lengthy delays on a main route linking Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells on Wednesday morning due, it seems, to some mystery traffic lights.

The stretch of the A26 worst affected, near Mereworth, is known for flooding in heavy rainfall and some drivers, forced to find other routes, wondered if overnight rain had caused it to become impassable.

But the culprit appears to be temporary traffic lights, which went up overnight.

A spokesman for Kent Police said: "We have no record of a major flood or accident, but a PCSO who passed that way said temporary traffic lights have gone up near Mereworth. We believe they have now been taken down."
