Video: See the time capsule
buried
A time capsule has been buried
beneath a new school to give students of the future a unique
insight into life today.
A copy of The Times and the Kent
Messenger joined a lap-top, school lunch menu, school photographs
and a lesson planner in a metal box sunk beneath the floor of the
new Cornwallis Academy building that is steadily nearing completion
alongside the existing school building in Hubbards Lane,
Linton.
Other items were contributed by
Boughton Monchelsea, Coxheath and Sutton Valence primary schools
and local parish councils.
One student from each year group
assisted at the ceremony and there were speeches from the Mayor of
Maidstone, Cllr Eric Hotson; the chairman of governors, Ray Harris,
and the head teacher David Simons. KCC’s cabinet member for
education Sarah Hohler was among the invited guests.
Mr Harris recalled using ready reckoners and
slide-rules in his school-days and wondered whether the lap-top
would seem as out-dated when the capsule was eventually unearthed
by generations to come.
Mr Simons said: "It’s a very proud
moment for the school. This ceremony marks the beginning of the end
of building our new school and the time capsule will give future
generations of Cornwallis students a snapshot of life in 2011. We
are only too aware of how lucky we are in getting a new school in
the current financial climate and look forward to moving in this
summer."
The new building is to be handed over
by developers Carillion at the end of June in time for students to
commence lessons at the start of September.
