A special assembly on the dangers of drugs has been held at a grammar school after pupils were suspended for buying a 'legal high'.

Three students were excluded from Cranbrook School - a voluntary aided boarding and day co-educational grammar school where sixth formers pay £3,300-per term to board - for having the controversial drug mephedrone at a party outside school.

The sixth formers bought the drug, which is banned in some countries, for use at a party outside of school time.

Also known as Bubbles, miaow miaow or MCAT, the drug is credited with causing euphoria and stimulation.

However, it has also been linked to side effects including nose bleeds, hallucinations, anxiety, paranoia, fits and delusions.

Head Angela Daly is reported to have taken the action despite the fact that the activity took place outside school and has put the pupils on drugs support programmes.

On the school's website today, a statement said the students, who admitted purchasing the drug, were interviewed by the safer schools' partnership co-ordinator.

Parents of all pupils known to be at the party have been contacted to let them know of the 'rumours' and the school's concerns.
