Second day of checks at superbug hospital

THE hospital at the centre of the superbug scandal has been visited again by the Healthcare Commission.

Heather Wood, the Healthcare Commission's investigation manager, is making a two-day visit to Maidstone Hospital yesterday and today.

It was Mrs Wood who compiled the commission’s report, published in October, into C-diff infections at the Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust, revealing how 90 people with C-diff died between 2004 and 2006.

The visit is a follow up to the report, not in response to any fresh concerns or superbug outbreaks. Mrs Wood is spending the two days speaking to clinical and managerial staff.

She said: "Every time the commission publishes a report we do a number of follow up visits to check to see if the recommendations we make are being implemented."

Mrs Wood said it was too soon to comment on her findings but added: "We have come here for ourselves to see what is happening and to try and get a feel for how things have changed. It must be remembered that is only two months since the report was published and the trust cannot be expected to work miracles since then."

The trust's interim chief executive, Glenn Douglas, said: "There is more we can do and more we will do to improve standards further.

"We hope the commission will see the many improvements we have made, contributing towards lower infection rates and better patient care."
