No trains between Maidstone East and Ashford due to smoke coming from train at Bearsted

A train has been evacuated due to smoke coming from underneath it.

No trains are running between Maidstone East and Ashford after the fire involving a train at Bearsted station in Ware Street, at around 2.41pm.

At the height of the incident, five fire engines and a bulk water carrier were in attendance as crews extinguished the flames.

National Rail say while the removal of this train is organised, the line from Ashford towards Maidstone East is blocked.

There were no reported injuries and the fire service says the cause of the fire is believed to be accidental and linked to the brakes overheating.

At 4.32pm fire crews left the scene.

In a post on X Southeastern said: “Both lines via Bearsted are now blocked.

“Services between London Victoria and Ashford will be diverted to run via Sevenoaks and Paddock Wood.

“You can use your ticket at no extra cost on Stagecoach route 10X between Maidstone and Ashford.”

National Rail say service between Maidstone East and Charing Cross are still able to run at this time.

Network rail say the disruption between Ashford International and Maidstone East is expected until 22:00.

The police said: “Officers were called to Bearsted railway station at around 3pm today, following reports of a fire.

“Officers attended, alongside colleagues from other emergency services, and passengers were safely evacuated with no reports of any injuries.“
