Maidstone: Meet Marjorie Rose, the Mall cleaner who turned 93 this week

A woman once dubbed Britain’s oldest cleaner has shown no intention of hanging up her mop as she celebrates turning 93.

Marjorie Rose is well known to shoppers and staff at The Mall in Maidstone, where she works.

Known as Marge, her special day on Monday was punctuated by shouts of “Congratulations!” from passing customers.

It is clear she enjoys a wry sense of humour in her job.

When we arrived to interview her and get pictures and video, she quipped: “As long as I don’t have to get my kit off.”

Marge was born in Cornwall on August 15, 1923, when Stanley Baldwin was Prime Minister. In November that year, Adolf Hitler led a failed coup in Munich in an attempt to seize power.

Marge, of College Road, Maidstone, moved to Kent after marrying husband Bill and they had five children.

In the Second World War she picked fruit to send to the Army and she also spent 40 years working for Alan Firmin picking fruits and seeds from the firm’s orchards.

Just over 30 years ago, her husband, Bill, died when he was struck down by Hodgkin’s lymphoma. He was 58.

Cold winter shifts led to her knees seizing up so she took up cleaning.

In 1985 she began working in the Stoneborough Centre, as it was called then. Her shifts can cover anything from scrubbing toilets to cleaning windows.

Asked the secret to her long life, she replied: “I don’t smoke and I don’t drink. I advise other people not to drink.”

Since starting her job she has celebrated the births of 21 great-grandchildren.

At weekends she meets up with different members of her family “I think they’re after my money,” she laughs.

At work, Marge enjoys meeting people and stopping for a chat, and says her wages help towards paying the bills.

Suzie Brindle, The Mall’s marketing manager, added: “Marge is a fantastic member of the team and never fails to amaze us with her zest for life.”

Looking to the future, the super cleaner says she cannot wait to be interviewed by the KM for her 100th birthday, before adding: “I’ll have a letter from the Queen and hopefully she’ll invite me for dinner.”
