Skating idyll is Christmas wish

HOPES for Maidstone scenes similar to those at New York's famous Rockefeller Centre are held for this Christmas, when a skating rink is to be built in the town square at Lockmeadow.

There will be log cabins, seasonal music and plans are in place for French traders to sell breads and cheeses to provide a true market atmosphere.

The Rockefeller Centre attracts tens of thousands of Christmas shoppers every winter, keen to ice skate and enjoy a hot chocolate while listening to festive music. It is hoped the skating rink will have a similar effect in Maidstone and attract the thousands of shoppers who normally travel to France and Belgium's Christmas market fairs.

Paul Metcalfe, general manager of the Lockmeadow Entertainment Complex, said: "Bluewater had one last year and they are always received very well. Everyone is pretty excited about having it here."

The skating rink, which would be made of a synthetic resin, would allow for 140 skaters at a time and boots would be available to hire from log cabins around the edge of the rink.

Skating discos could be held with professional skaters putting on displays. Pantomime stars are also being approached to make appearances on some evenings.

The rink will be open from November 25 to January 5. Sponsors are being sought for the ice rink and its activites. Anyone wishing to help should call 0207 479 2912.
