A knife bar and drug sniffer dogs have been used in a town centre to crack down on crime.

Officers from the Maidstone Town Centre Task Force carried out searches on Friday, October 28.

Police patrolled the town centre, including Week Street, Earl Street and the High Street, to deter any violence or criminal activity.

Brenchley Gardens was also searched for discarded knives, although no weapons were found.

The force worked with licensed premises throughout the night and CCTV operators to prevent nightlife in the town from becoming an easy target for criminals.

Officers also proactively checked on the welfare of vulnerable individuals who appeared to be in need of assistance.

Two men were arrested on suspicion of drug supply offences following a foot chase along the River Medway path.

Class A drugs along with some cash was seized.

Several cars were also stopped and checked with one motorist receiving a traffic offence report for driving without insurance.

A man stopped in Earl Street was detained as he was wanted for failing to appear at court.

More than 1,000 cannabis plants were also seized from a property in Bank Street.

Chief Inspector Mark McLellan, district commander for Kent, said: "Residents and visitors to the town centre can expect to see an enhanced police presence during the weekends throughout November and into December.

"We are determined to tackle those intent on violent or disorderly behaviour and will be targeting those who travel to the county town to commit crime.

"Please also remember we depend on the public for assistance. You can be our eyes and ears, so if you see anything suspicious call 101, or 999 if a crime is in progress."

It comes after multiple late-night incidents in the town centre, particularly in Week Street.
