Veolia waste lorry tips rotting food over A20 at Hollingbourne

Traffic has been delayed on the A20 this morning after a waste cart spilled its load.

The driver of the waste lorry was near the roundabout by the Mercure Great Danes Hotel at Hollingbourne, when a side door flapped open, spilling a stinking load of rotting food waste.

Witnesses said the smell was horrendous.

The vehicle was on its way to deposit its load at the Blaise Farm site at Offham in West Malling to be turned into fertilizer.

A Veolia spokesperson said: “We can confirm that at around 6:50am this morning, there was a spillage from a defective hatch on a Veolia vehicle carrying food recycling from local businesses on the A20 near Hollingbourne.

"The vehicle was inspected and made safe to continue its journey to the recycling facility, while a response team cleared and washed down the road. Within two hours the incident was resolved with limited impact on traffic flows. We would like to apologise to any drivers who were inconvenienced."
