A man found face down in water in a Kent park had suffered fatal head injuries in a fall from his e-scooter, a coroner has ruled.
Anatolii Cherevko's lifeless body was discovered in Maidstone's Mote Park by a passerby on the morning of July 27 this year.
Police and paramedics were called at 5.20am and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The 24-year-old had been drinking beers at a friend's house the previous night and had left to make his way home almost six hours before he was found.
Tests later showed he had been more than twice the drink-drive limit at the time of his death, which an inquest concluded was an accident.
In August, tributes were paid to the “positive and strong-spirited” young man who first moved to England in September 2021 from the small village of Kolki in Ukraine.
At an inquest at Oakwood House in Maidstone on Tuesday, area coroner Bina Patel explained how Anatolii had been at his friend’s house and had been drinking Corona beers.
Evidence read from the police report said he had left the address on his e-scooter at around 11.45pm to go back to his home in Fisher Street via Mote Park, a route he would always take.
However, the inquest heard how a man walking through the park on his way to work in the early hours of July 27 noticed an e-scooter and a male in the water.
Toxicology reports revealed Anatolii’s blood alcohol level was 216mg per 100 millilitres of blood, with the toxicologist noting that levels between 200-300mg per 100 millilitres of blood is “often characterised by coma or passing out”. The drink-drive limit, for comparison, is 80.
However, his friend told officers Anatolii had consumed only three to four bottles of beer and there was “no other alcohol or drugs present”.
Meanwhile, a post-mortem examination found that Anatolii’s skull was “fractured with bleeding in the brain suggesting brain trauma” which had been caused by a head injury.
The police report said: “The male travelled through an unlit park late at night, there was a fair amount of tree foliage, this likely obscured any moonlight.
“There were no marks or injuries to the body to suggest he had been assaulted by another person.
“The death was considered not suspicious.”
After hearing the evidence, Miss Patel said: “The male had injuries consistent with falling off his e-scooter and into the water.
“Police confirmed there was no evidence of third-party involvement or suspicious circumstances.”
She then concluded Anatolii’s cause of death was “massive” head trauma and he had suffered a fractured skull and bones.
She said his alcohol levels may have contributed to his death but did not directly cause it.
Miss Patel said: “I will return a conclusion of accident”.
Paying tribute, his friends Khrystyna Sorochan and Mykola Andriievskyi said in a joint statement: “He was an incredibly talented person, he knew how to make people laugh when they were sad.
“At school, he showed his talent on stage. He told funny stories, danced, was very artistic, and wrote poetry.
“This guy's life cannot be described in a few paragraphs. It was bright but at the same time very difficult with constant obstacles, but Anatolii never gave up.
"Since his passing, he has left only the warmest, kindest and brightest memories.”
