.

An 18-year-old is fighting for his life after a serious road accident.

The incident occurred on the Maidstone-bound carriageway of the A249 at Detling, just north of Detling Hill, at around 6.50am on Saturday.

A silver Peugeot 306 left the road and collided with a tree. The driver, who was from Ramsgate, was trapped in his vehicle for nearly 50 minutes while firefighters struggled to free him. He is currently in Maidstone Hospital where his condition was said to be serious but stable.

The crash caused considerable disruption for other traffic, with the road closed from the Stockbury roundabout until just before noon while the vehicle was recovered and an accident investigation team went to work.

Officers from the serious collision investigation unit are appealing for witnesses to the incident to come forward by ringing the witness appeal line on 01622 798538.
