A water supplier is warning of multiple burst water pipes across its network as thousands of metres of piping thaw after freezing temperatures - leaving many customers with no water.
South East Water has set up a bottled water station in Lenham and various other sites across the region following burst pipes.
Meanwhile, homes in the Sittingbourne area are also reported to be without water or suffering low pressure this evening.
A spokesman for Southern Water, which supplies the Sittingbourne area, said: "We’re sorry that some customers in the Sittingbourne area of are currently experiencing low water pressure or loss of supply. We’re working hard to restore supplies as soon as possible. Thanks for your patience and understanding whilst we work".
The water station in North Down Close, Lenham, was set up earlier today, just moments after the water supplier South East Water asked customers to keep an eye out for leaks after 130 million extra litres of water was used up yesterday.
It is now suspected the extra water usage was down to a number of leaks across South East Water's network.
A statement on their site reads: "At this stage we are unable to say when supplies will be back to normal as we are trying to locate what we believe to be a very large number of very small bursts right across our network. We are dealing with multiple leaks in cities, towns and villages so when we repair a pipe there are others still causing issues and water is not returning.
"Yesterday the high demand resulted in 630 million litres of water being treated and sent out into the network compared to an average of 500 million litres of water on a normal winter’s day. This extra water would be enough to fill 50 Olympic sizes swimming pools.
"With water issues happening right across the country, the supplier of bottled water is under pressure and the company is doing all it can to get additional deliveries to areas without water.
"We are really sorry for those still without water across Sussex and Kent. We have a large team of technicians from across the company looking for a number of small burst mains across large areas.
"Due to the recent freezing temperatures, water supply issues are happening across the country and this has put bottled water supplies under pressure.
"We will be working around the clock to restore water supplies and will keep you updated."
