The day Thatcher came to town

With The Iron Lady film fever sweeping the nation we delved into our archives to see if the lady herself had ever visited.

She had - and she wasn't the only Prime Minister to descend on Maidstone.

Mrs T came to the county town in 1984, meeting workers at the Royal British Legion, Aylesford, before coming into Maidstone town centre, with husband Denis.

Our delve into the archives also reveal Edward Heath enjoying a concert at Leeds Castle, Winston Churchill at the County Show and Gordon Brown being mobbed by enthusiastic dance students, during a question and answer session.
