Some might argue that the Book of Revelation would make a fitting soundtrack to kicking out time in Maidstone town centre.

And nightclubbers may have a chance to find out next weekend when the Rev Eric Delve, Vicar of St Luke's Church, holds a 24-hour preach.

He will utter the famous first words of Genesis at noon on Saturday, and intends to wrap up the apocalyptic visions of Revelation by noon the following day - so late-night clubbers should be well placed to hear the beginning of the New Testament.

He will stand outside Marks and Spencer in Week Street.

Mr Delve aims to raise funds for the Detling Conference, one of the largest Christian festivals in the South East, which will be held at the county showground in Detling, from August 2 to 7.

Mr Delve said: “It should be rather fun. I want to reach people who are not yet believers so I want to go out there on the street and just do something a bit wacky. The church needs to be out there.”

He said around £100,000 was needed to be raised each year to stage the conference.

“Basically, I will be covering from the creation to the end of the world,” he said.

He plans to have some company through the night from parishioners at St Luke’s, but is also hoping to get a friendly reaction from people out in the town centre in the early hours of the morning.
