Nearly 3,000 school-children descended on the Kent Showground at Detling to experience a taste - literally in some cases - of the countryside.

They were able to try traditional rural crafts and skills such as basket-weaving, butter-making, baking bread, pressing apple juice and making their own sausages.

They were also able to visit stands hosted by country organisations such as Kent Life, The National Fruit Show and the Kent Farmers Market, as well as enjoy a birds of prey display by the Hawking Centre.

But for many youngsters, it was the animals who won their hearts, with a chance to pet horses, lambs, calves, rabbits, guinea pigs and chickens.

One of the most popular displays was Stuart Barnes and his Dancing Sheep.

The Living Land Exhibition event was co-ordinated by the Kent County Agricultural Society.

Spokesman Hannah Stimpson said: “We had 2,728 young visitors from 52 primary schools across the county, as well as 50 exhibitors.

“All the feedback we’ve had has been very positive. The children really enjoyed themselves.”
