Tonbridge boss Tommy Warrilow was set to complete a deal for ex-Brighton defender Gary Elphick at training this week and he could feature for Angels at Farnborough on Saturday.
Robbie Kember has been released to make the move for the Eastleigh man possible, while Warrilow, pictured, is set to talk to other players about their terms in a bid to manage his budget.
He said: "It’s no secret I have to balance the books here. I don’t know how on earth we’ve done it, but we got Gary here and without breaking our budget.
"It’s another fantastic signing for this club – he wears his heart on his sleeve, he is experienced, committed, organised, scores goals from set-pieces. He’ll be a real benefit to the club."
He added: "I’ve released Robbie Kember to free some money up and I’ll need to talk to some other lads about their money, though I won’t release them."
A week after being denied by a last-minute Sutton equaliser, Angels rallied from 2-0 down with 15 minutes to play to snatch a dramatic point against the same opponents last Saturday thanks to a header from substitute Mark Lovell three minutes from time.
Angels have now gone nine Blue Square Bet South matches unbeaten – seven of them draws – and no team have lost fewer games.
A Gillingham XI won 2-0 in a friendly at Longmead on Tuesday night.
Lee Worgan, George Purcell and Lee Browning should all return from injury for the game at Farnborough.
