Former Gravesend centre-half John Scarborough was among the trialists used by Tonbridge in their 4-0 home defeat by League 1 Crawley Town on Wednesday night.

The game went ahead after a terrific effort by volunteers - including boss Tommy Warrilow - to clear water from the pitch following a storm.

Warrilow (pictured) said: “It was soul-destroying to hear about the rain before I left for the ground so I was pleased we were able to get the game on.

“Crawley had million-pound players in their team and are a quality side but overall I’m happy with what I saw from my lads.”

Scarborough was a late addition to the Angels squad after Warrilow found himself short of defenders.

It could yet turn into something permanent.

The manager said: “I bumped into John in a gym a couple of months ago when he was trying to sort out a club.

“I was down to one centre-half on Monday - Olly Schulz - so I gave John a ring and he came down.

“He did well and if I can find some dough then he may sign.

“But he’s also training at Maidstone and I’ve no qualms if he joins them.”

Former Ramsgate striker Mark Lovell was also given a run-out after contacting Tonbridge.

Warrilow said: “I don’t know where we’ll go with it yet but Mark is a good player on his day.”

Angels continue their pre-season campaign at home to Ebbsfleet tomorrow (Saturday, 3pm).
