Tonbridge Road, Barming, near Maidstone, sealed off after car crashes into lamppost

A driver was lucky to escape apparently uninjured this evening after his car smashed into a lamppost in Tonbridge Road, Barming.

Police sealed the road off at around 10.30pm to recover the crumpled Golf which had ploughed into a street light following heavy rainfall.

Drivers were being instructed to find alternative routes after officers cordoned off the area at the junction with Queen's Road, by the Cherry Tree pub, to deal with the debris.

The motorist is believed to have escaped unscathed but the vehicle was a write-off.

A recovery truck was sent to the A26 and was still on the scene at midnight. An ambulance was called but the driver is not believed to have been taken to hospital.

It is not known what caused the one-car collision, but the accident occurred after heavy downpours made driving conditions treacherous in places across the county.
