Town centre building evacuated

A Maidstone Town Centre building was evacuated after a fire scare today.

Offices at Brenchley House in Week Street were cleared of Kent County Council staff at about 12.30pm when a smoke alarm sounded.

Customers at the Society Rooms pub and restaurant on the ground floor of the building were also told to leave.

Two fire crews from Maidstone entered the four-storey premises and traced the smoke to a faulty air conditioning unit.

No fire was detected.

Crews were stood down at 1.30pm and staff were allowed back in the building following a health and safety check.
