Two out of three lanes were coned off and long delays led to two-mile congestion back along Loose Road, as well as from Knightrider Street to Mote Road.

One driver said: “Absolutely chaos and had to abandon car on outskirts of town.”

A spokesman for Kent Police said: “We was called at 9.30am on Wednesday (December 13) to a collision involving a lorry and a car in Bishops Way, Maidstone.

“Officers attended the scene where no injuries were reported and arrangements were made to recover the vehicles.”

Traffic has now returned to normal following the incident.
