Trains were unable to run on a major route across the county because of a fault with signalling this lunchtime.
Southeastern services on the line between Ashford International and Maidstone East were suspended earlier after the technical issue emerged.
Network Rail engineers were called to the area to investigate the fault, which was affecting trains between Kent and London Victoria.
The route between Ashford and Maidstone serves communities including Lenham, Harrietsham and Bearsted.
A Southeastern spokesman said: "There's a fault with the signalling system which means trains cannot run in either direction between Maidstone East and Ashford. Network Rail engineers are en route to the area."
The disruption was expected to last until around 2.30pm, and the railway operator says some trains may divert via Paddock Wood. Passengers looking to travel from Ashford to Maidstone can change at Paddock Wood for services to Maidstone West and Maidstone Barracks.
Southeastern announced the route was now clear with a tweet at 2.11pm.
Travellers affected by the temporary suspension of services may be entitled to compensation if they experienced a delay in completing their journey.
