Maidstone: Travellers have moved on after setting up camp with caravans in Medway Street car park

Travellers who set up camp in a town centre car park have moved on after a day.

Police were called to the Medway Street site at 6.40pm on Monday after around nine campervans arrived.

No crimes were found to have taken place but officers were working with Maidstone Borough Council, which owns the short-stay car park, to remove them.

By Wednesday morning, the travellers had moved on.

A spokesman for Maidstone Borough Council said: "We became aware of an unauthorised encampment in Medway Street car park on September 6.

"We attended the site that morning and issued a notice that required the occupants to leave within 24 hours.

"We are pleased to confirm that the notice has been complied with and all occupants have now left the site as instructed."
