A teenager who was found dead at a park has been described as a “gentle and kind” young person.
Emoke Stephani, 17, was found dead on Friday after being reported missing earlier in the day.
The youngster, who was also known as Ray, was part of Maidstone Volleyball and was found at Mote Park near the town centre.
Ray’s teammates and coaches have been left “devastated” by the death, which police aren’t treating as suspicious.
One coach said: “I have been coaching Ray for the last four years – from a brand new player into a fully-fledged member of the club and team.
“Ray was always quiet, but they had a natural kind spirit that spilled onto the other players. Ray was always there to help and encourage others but never wanted to be a burden themselves.
“I have received messages from people who perhaps didn't know Ray very well as a person, but knew that they were always there to help out at matches, and everybody in the club has fond memories of them.
“I have seen Ray grow not just as a player, but as a teammate, and as a person. They were independent and showed a passion for volleyball and their teammates which was undeniable.
“Ray's smile would light up the court. We feel as though we have lost a member of our family who will never be able to be replaced.”
The youngster was described as a “perfectly unique” team member who will be “sorely missed and never forgotten”.
A spokesman for the club added: “Ray's spirit will live on in the club as a beacon for others. This is such a tragic loss of life and has devastated us all.
“I wish to send my condolences to everyone who knew them, but especially sending my thoughts to Ray's family & friends.”
A police spokesman said on Saturday they were called to Mote Park on Friday evening.
They added: “Following our appeal for information yesterday, officers searching for a missing 17-year-old girl in Maidstone have sadly located a body.
“The death is not being treated as suspicious and our thoughts are with her family and friends.”
A report is being prepared for the coroner.
