A 24-hour sponsored tyre-flip is underway to raise cash for children whose parents have been killed fighting for their country.

Members of Maidstone's 36 Engineer Regiment, based at Invicta Park Barracks, are currently taking turns to turn over a 5ft tyre in the car park of the Tesco Grove Green Superstore.

The 12 men are raising cash for Scotty's Little Soldiers, a charity dedicated to supporting the children of men and women killed while serving in the British Armed Forces.

Working in three teams of four they must continually flip the tyre throughout the 24-hour period to complete the challenge.

Organiser Callum Kelly said before the start of the challenge that he was looking forward to raising money for a good cause.

The 23-year-old said: "It's a great charity. They take the children out on day trips, buy them Christmas presents, all the things they might miss if they've lost a mother or father.

"It's a tyre from an armoured vehicle. I don't know how much it weighs but it's heavy. We do this in training at the camp though, and they're a fit bunch of lads, so we should be fine."

The group had raised £400 in sponsorship before they started the challenge and are hoping to collect even more cash today and tomorrow morning.

They wished to thank Tesco for allowing them to use the land and The Early Bird for providing refreshments.

The team will be doing the challenge, near The Early Bird pub, until 10.30am tomorrow (Wednesday).
