An amphitheatre is set to undergo a makeover after it was trashed by vandals.
Bricks were dislodged and ripped from the steps of the open-air staging area in Maidstone River Park, near the Archbishop’s Palace, on April 21 causing major damage.
It was reported to Maidstone council and staff inspected the extent of the damage on April 27.
The council said it was made safe the same day with temporary repair works beginning the day after.
The work to the landmark was finished on May 2, costing the council £1,500, but much of the damage is still present and many have taken to social media to vent their frustration.
Stewart Wood posted pictures of the work to Facebook saying: “What a disgusting eyesore, looked better with the blocks missing. Someone has knocked even more off since the bodge”.
Others voiced their opinions in the comments. Mark Baines said: “That is just shoddy, I could certainly do far better.”
Pete Gammon said: “Someone's having a laugh, surely that wasn't done professionally.”
Some steps are still without bricks and many of the gaps have been filled with concrete but the council have made it clear these repairs are only temporary with plans to refurbish the site in full.
MBC spokesperson said: “Following recent damage to the Amphitheatre we have now carried out a thorough site inspection.
“The overall damage to the seating wasn’t as severe as first suspected. The damaged seating areas will be repaired and the brick edgings improved in such a way to make it less susceptible to this type of damage and will improve the safety and resilience of the Amphitheatre seats.
“Maidstone Borough Council is currently awaiting quotations to refurbish the Hermitage Amphitheatre area.
“The refurbishment works will encompass the whole Amphitheatre. This work has been prompted following the recent damage and will improve the safety and resilience of the Amphitheatre seats.
The damage was also reported to police who released an appeal for witnesses. No arrests have been made.
