RESIDENTS living in areas earmarked for controversial new parking regulations in Maidstone have a fortnight left to make their views known.

The suggested residents' parking scheme embraces a wide ranging review of on-street parking.

Proposals include reducing double yellow lines to allow overnight parking and the introduction of resident parking bays.

Under the scheme residents would get one free permit, with a £25 annual charge payable for a second vehicle and £50 for a third.

Several residents have already contacted Maidstone council with a variety of concerns leading a number of changes being suggested.

Visitor permits are likely to be substantially revised and simplified. The council originally proposed £1 for a five hour permit and £3 for a 24-hour stay with short stay scratchcards on sale at nearby shops.

Parking for residents with their own drive is also likely to be changed to include a first free permit.

Maidstone council's cabinet member for planning and transportation Cllr Malcolm Robertson (Lib Dem) said: "No-one ever said that the original proposals were done and dusted. The council had to set the ball rolling but I always knew the scheme would change and develop with the views of residents.

"We've teased out the issues and are building up a clearer picture of how the scheme can be operated."
