A man was treated for breathing in smoke after a chip pan fire in his home last night.
The man, thought to be in his mid 30’s, was alerted to the blaze at his Wykeham Grove bungalow in Leeds after his smoke alarms sounded.
He then attempted to tackle the fire in an electrical chip pan, breathing in smoke, before climbing out of a ground floor window, as his front door was locked and his key wasn’t to hand.
Two fire engines were sent to the property at 9.17pm and crews wearing breathing apparatus tackled the blaze, before clearing the smoke and fumes with a ventilation fan.
Maidstone watch manager Roy Ingram said: "Despite our continued efforts to get the message across, we are still being called to a number of fires caused by unattended cooking. If you are unlucky enough to have a fire in your home, don’t tackle it yourself, get out and call the fire service out.
"Make a fire escape plan. Keep exits clear so that everyone can escape if there’s a fire and ensure that everyone in your home can easily find the keys for doors and windows."
He added: "When using electrical appliances always follow the manufacturer’s instructions and service them regularly."
The fire left the kitchen and hallway badly damaged.
