Fire starts in utility room in Hartnup Street, Maidstone after candle left unattended

Firefighters have warned about the dangers of using tealights following a blaze in a utility room.

Crews were called to Hartnup Street at 11.50am, where they managed to prevent the flames from spreading from the outbuilding to the rest of the three-storey terraced house.

The fire is thought to have been caused by a candle or tealight.

One of the exterior window frames was damaged by heat and smoke. A ventilation fan was also used to clear smoke from the property.

Kent Fire and Rescue Service are warning people to take extra care with tea lights and candles.

A spokesman said: "We advise people to never leave them unattended and to ensure that they are placed on a heat proof surface in a purposely designed holder."
