Bomb disposal experts have been called following the discovery of a wartime shell in Maidstone town centre.
Police confirmed it was found close to the River Medway at Fairmeadow at around 6.50pm.
A force spokesman said: "Images of the object were sent by officers to a Ministry of Defence Explosives Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team and it has subsequently been assessed as a World War Two incendiary device.
"Following advice from the EOD a temporary road closure has now been removed.
"Police remain at the scene, awaiting the arrival of a disposal team."
The device was discovered by Anton Eiffert and his partner Karen Hollands, who were trying out their new hobby magnet fishing in what was only their third time doing the activity.
The construction industry worker, 32, said: "I threw the magnet under the bridge and it caught something heavy and as I pulled it out I realised it was some sort of artillery shell.
"We put it against the wall and called the police.
"It was a bit scary at one point.
"We still have not been told whether it was live or not."
