Maidstone's FA Trophy clash with Histon could end up being played at the Cambridgeshire club’s ground or at a neutral venue.

The Stones’ fifth attempt to get their first round tie against the Blue Square Premier side on tomorrow (Saturday) is certain to be scuppered by the big freeze, further delaying any possible second round tie at Salisbury.

The tie was originally scheduled for December 12 and Stones joint-boss Alan Walker said he can’t remember a game being delayed for so long.

He said: "It is frustrating. The pitch was frozen down to four inches on Tuesday night (when the fourth attempt to stage the game at Homelands failed) and the snow has made things even more difficult.

"I can’t see it going ahead and so we are giving consideration to playing it at a neutral ground and Histon have offered to hold it there."

Walker (pictured) said the club were hesitant to agree to give up their home advantage, adding: "We want to give ourselves the best possible chance of winning the game and to give up home advantage would be a cruel blow."

Maidstone finished their festive fixtures with two morale-boosting away wins over Hastings and Margate which moved them up to seventh in the Ryman League Premier Division.

Walker said: "The division is so tight. In six days we went from one end to the other. We just need to find some consistency from somewhere."

James Peacock will miss next Saturday’s scheduled game at Tonbridge after his sending-off against Margate at Hartsdown Park on Saturday.
