A 55-year-old woman who placed adverts on buses for an egg donor is celebrating the arrival of a baby girl.

Katy Weeks arrived on June 3, after her parents Linda and Richard Weeks, from Maidstone, spent 14 years trying to have children, including two unsuccessful IVF attempts.

Last year, in desperation, the couple paid several thousands to advertise on London buses, looking for an egg donor. The ads explained how the couple had been happily married since 1993, but that their dream of children had eluded them.

A donor came forward and a fertilised egg was implanted in Mrs Weeks in September.

The couple have not and will not meet the donor.

Mrs Weeks said: "Thank you does not seem to be enough to say to this lady. After 14 years of trying this really was the last roll of the dice for us.

"We had decided that if this last attempt was unsuccessful we would give up. To be honest, now Katy is here, we forget sometimes just what we have been through to have her here with us.

"But we will certainly have a lot to tell her when she is older."

Mrs Weeks said she enjoyed a healthy pregnancy, and hit back at people who have suggested she should not have children at 55.

"We will have to sit down and make some decisions," she added. "But Katy is much wanted, I am a fit and healthy 55-year-old and we have lots of hobbies and interests we think Katy will enjoy."
