Works which were expected to cause 15 weeks of traffic disruption along the A249 have been postponed.

The work, to upgrade a water pipeline, was due to start on Monday, but has now been put back while the company discusses traffic management measures with Kent Highways and the Highways Agency.

Traffic control will be needed while this essential work is carried out to ensure the safety of the public and contractors.

South East Water will be laying a new 730-metre long section of pipeline beneath Sittingbourne Road over 15 weeks.

It will mean lane closures and speed restrictions between the junctions of Hayes Lane and Steps Hill Road.

Steps Hill Road will also be temporarily closed.

It is hoped the improvements, originally planned for September, will lead to fewer bursts.

Delivery Manager at South East Water, Chris Love said: “We do need to carry out this upgrade and we hope we will be able to get under way as soon as possible.

“We are aware the A249 is a busy road and therefore we need to ensure both motorists and people working for our contractor are safe while this work takes place.

"I would like to apologise to motorists and the local community for any inconvenience this essential work will cause and thank them in advance for their patience and co-operation.”
