More on KentOnline
As we fill our shopping bags with gifts for our loved ones, spare a thought for those who would wish for only for a roof over their heads and a hot meal this Christmas.
The Kent Messenger’s annual You Can Help campaign, run in conjunction with Maidstone Homeless Care, collects cans of food for the needy, homeless, together with donations of other items for those who have fallen on hard times.
Each year, dozens of schools, businesses and supermarkets across Maidstone and Malling get together to gather tins and other things to dish out to those which will help those without a home, or those who have fallen on such desperate times that they may not be able to pay for food.
Last year’s campaign produced a staggering 7,500 items in the run-up to Christmas, and, although the appeal does not directly request money, a further £9,382 was also given.
Those who have already signed up to help include Invicta Grammar School, Maidstone Grammar School, All Saints’ Church in Loose, Oakwood Park Grammar School, Maidstone Studios and Fusion at Park Wood and Tesco in Farleigh Hill, Tovil.
There is also a collection box in the KM’s office at 6 & 7 Middle Row, Maidstone.
If you would like to get involved contact the Friends of Maidstone Day Centre by emailing secretary@homelesscare.org.uk.
Look out for more details of the campaign and updates on where you can take your donations in the KM in the coming weeks.
