These pupils have pledged to start walking to school every Wednesday to cut pollution and congestion in Maidstone.

The youngsters from East Borough Primary School made the pledge on day three of Maidstone Goes Green Week. The week is encouraging people who live or work in the County Town to ditch the car.

They also walked through Maidstone town centre singing their walking bus song.

Each day of the green week has a different theme and promotes travel by bus, train, park and ride, car sharing schemes, or using foot or pedal power.

The week has been organised by Kent County Council who already run several walk to school schemes in conjunction with the KM Walk to School charity.

David Joyner, manager of KCC’s sustainable transport team, said: "We do live in a car culture but the roads will grind to a complete halt if we have more and more cars on them.

"The week has been about just getting people to try out an alternative."

Friday is In Town Without My Car Day, where people will be encouraged to come into town by any method other than the car.
