FIRE chiefs and police are appealing for help from anyone who may have witnessed a number of fires being started in and around a housing estate.

Trees and shrubs have been the chief targets for arsonists on the Parkwood estate at Maidstone.

The first incident was reported at around 11.45pm on Friday, July 7, when a number of trees went up in flames in Longshaw Road.

Subsequent reports indicated that a tree was set ablaze in nearby Brishing Lane at about 12.20am on Saturday, July 8, with another one following at 12.45am in Jenkins Drive.

Police would especially like to speak to a group of young people, thought to be aged between 15 and 16, who were seen by Kent Fire and Rescue Service crews in the vicinity of all the fires as they were being brought under control.

Stuart Skilton, head of Community Fire Safety, said: “We are grateful for Kent Police’s efforts to try to track down those responsible for these incidents.

"We want to make it clear that arson won’t be tolerated and we will continue to work together to ensure the perpetrators are brought to task through the courts.

"The act of arson represents not only a direct threat to life and property but also diverts valuable firefighting and police resources away from people who genuinely need our help”.
